Jason Gong is an international pianist and cellist from Michigan. He received his Masters in Piano Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, United Kingdom studying under Prof. Noriko Ogawa and Prof. Paul Roberts, and his Bachelors of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan studying under Dr. Louis Nagel.
Although his foundations are in classical music, Jason loves to explore the connections between all creative disciplines. Within music, this includes studying how various genres relate to each other and how politics, traditions, and cultures inform those relations. Outside of music, this includes how other mediums of expression such as movement or visual arts relate and connect with sound. These questions drive his love for improvisation and passion for collaboration, both with other musicians as well as other disciplines.
Some of his recent musical explorations include curated performances for both young and adult audiences via Michigan library streamed programming, the creation and performance of original works that blend acoustic and electronic instruments alongside video for the Curiosa exhibition in Portugal, and the performance of French impressionistic piano music alongside original contemporary dance in London.
Jason has also performed in various chamber settings from duets, trios, and quartets, to larger collaborations such as the Guildhall New Music Ensemble, UM University Choir, UM MUSKET Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Ensemble, Pioneer Theatre Guild, the Panache Group, Mosaic Youth Theatre, and the Seaway Chorale and Orchestra. Jason has also run music classes and workshops with groups such as the Saturday Arts Academy in Detroit, CellochanWoods Music course in Vermont, 7 Mile Music in Detroit, and London Music Courses Ltd.
Jason is currently based in SE Michigan, where he works as an active performer, accompanist, and music teacher. He maintains a private studio for both piano and cello and has been teaching privately since 2012. He performs music for a weekly service alongside guitarist David French at Journey of Faith Christian Church, and is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, the Michigan Music Teachers Association, and his local Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild.
